Beware of Early Morning Doorstep Encounters: A Cautionary Tale of a Potential Scam
In today’s blog, we explore a recent incident that underscores the importance of caution whenever strangers approach your home, especially during odd hours. A homeowner and his family experienced an unsettling visit from a woman claiming to be in distress, which some may interpret as an attempted scam. This case serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and to trust your instincts when dealing with unknown visitors.
The Incident
Late on a Sunday night, at approximately 1 a.m., a woman in her 50s was observed near a quiet suburban street. Witnesses report that she was shining a torch into residential windows and ringing doorbells, all while quietly calling out, “Hello?” A neighbor’s Ring doorbell footage captured her wandering the area, raising suspicions about her intentions.
In this particular case, a resident was in their kitchen preparing meals for the week ahead when they noticed the woman staring through their window, directly on the driveway. Recognizing her distress, the homeowner decided to respond despite the odd hour.
The Encounter
The woman explained that she had been visiting a friend nearby, took a taxi back home because she claimed to live just down the street, and was now locked out of her house. She stated that her cat was inside, she needed to reach a hospital appointment the following morning, and asked for (£15) to call a taxi to retrieve her keys and return. She refused offers of a ride, citing wanting not to impose, and proposed instead leaving her iPad as collateral, promising to return with the money the next day.
At first glance, the story appeared plausible — a distressed woman with a simple, small request. The homeowner, somewhat suspicious but empathetic, decided to give her the money and accepted the iPad as collateral. The woman then departed, leaving the property somewhat unsettled.
Why the Encounter Raises Questions
In retrospect, several aspects of this encounter appear suspicious:
- She had a phone to call a taxi but did not make a call or try to contact her friend directly.
- She refused a straightforward offer of a lift, which could have quickly resolved her predicament.
- The story was compounded with multiple elements designed to evoke sympathy—a “double sob story,” if you will.
- The woman vanished from sight gracefully, as confirmed by a neighbor who overheard the interaction but could not locate her afterward.
Clues and Concerns
- The lady appeared to be suffering as she walked but whether this was just disability or some other affiction we do not know.
- She seemed to be lucid and well disposed to people although she did not make it clear why she was stuck outside at such a late hour. We do not believe a thief would use a torch whilst in front of a residential building at that hour or call out ‘hello!’
- She did not seem to be shaking or breathing heavily or any of the other signs of dangerous drug use.
